The word “organic” these days is thrown around a lot, almost as much the words “on fleek” or “squad goals”.  But even though we use it a lot, the word itself doesn’t tell us a lot what it really means.

In a few words -  organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.

To more words - here are several facts about organic food:

It’s much healthier

According to several studies, organic produce had higher levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, antioxidants, and minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, and iron. They also found that organic milk had higher omega-3 content, these healthy fats keep inflammation low in the body.

It can be more expensive than regular food

Organic food is typically more expensive than conventional food, sometimes 50% higher than the same conventionally grown food.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows for organic though

On the flip side, organic fruits, vegetables, and grains had lower protein and amino acid content. This is likely due to the lower availability of nitrogen in the soil, and nitrogen is needed to make amino acids.

Different, yet similar worldwide regulations

The European Union, the U.S., Canada, Japan, and other countries require organic food producers to have a special certification based on government-defined standards to market food as organic.

It consumes more time and space

A liter of organic milk requires 80% more land than conventional milk to produce, has 20% more global warming potential, releases 60% more nutrients into water sources, and contributes 70% more to acid rain

Advantages

Advantages of organic meat include reduced exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
